Inside the Agitprop

Shortly after the news broke about a confrontation between US warships and Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz, I wrote,
We don't really know what happened here, but, given the Bush/Cheney administration's track record, I am more than a bit skeptical that this was really a confrontation initiated by Iran. I am more inclined to see it as Bush/Cheney agitprop designed to grease the wheels as Bush makes his case against Iran during his Middle East trip.
My suspicion has now been confirmed through careful reporting by Gareth Porter at IPS.
Senior Pentagon officials, evidently reflecting a broader administration policy decision, used an off-the-record Pentagon briefing to turn the Jan. 6 U.S.-Iranian incident in the Strait of Hormuz into a sensational story demonstrating Iran's military aggressiveness, a reconstruction of the events following the incident shows.
Do yourself a favor and read the article; it beautifully demonstrates the modus operandi of the Bush/Cheney administration.
